Community police and competent authorities have pledged to tackle sexual harassment in Iraqi streets, markets and even within government authorities, outgoing Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi affirmed Tuesday.

"We have directed the community police and other competent authorities to root out sexual harassers as they pose a threat to the Iraqi society,” Al-Abadi said in a press conference.

He also deemed sexual harassment in Iraq as an unacceptable phenomenon, especially when committed by officials who take advantages of their positions.

In earlier statements, Al-Abadi announced he is not leaving the political scene; he hinted at the possibility of accepting a “sovereign” portfolio in the incoming government, and announced his intention to restructure his parliamentary Nasr bloc.
