Siemens to supply Iraq with 11 GW of power generation equipment

Siemens is expected to share a deal with General Electric to improve Iraq’s energy supply system, according to the Financial Times on Wednesday.

Siemens had been expected to win the reported $15 billion deal to supply Iraq with 11 gigawatts of power generation equipment.

In September, Siemens Chief Executive Joe Kaeser spoke with outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi about the deal.

US pressure in favor of GE has been intensified since Abadi has been replaced by Adil Abdul Mahdi, according to the report.

In February, Siemens made an offer to build new power plants in Iraq. The project has been expected to take about four years with an output of 11 gigawatts.

The project would increase the number of Iraqis who have access to reliable electricity by 50 percent to 23 million.
