Writer and political analyst Raad al-Ibrahimi said that
Iran's cutting off water from Iraq is a purely political decision to put
pressure on Iraq in order to ease US pressure on Iran.
"The timing of Iran cutting off water from Iraq is purely political," Ibrahimi said in an interview on Alghad TV, adding that this shows Iran is “capable of influencing its neighbors, including Iraq."
Iran announced earlier that it was cutting of 7 billion cubic meters of water from its western border with Iraq on orders from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran had previously cut off its tributaries that feed the Tigris River in Iraq, which caused the water levels in the river to drop significantly.
