Halbusi to visit Turkey for talks with Iranian counterpart on water issues

Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq Mohamed Al Halbusi

Iraq’s newly-elected parliamentary speaker Mohamed al-Halbusi asserted Monday that he will visit Turkey soon to discuss Iraq’s water problem.

During a press conference following his meeting with President Braham Salih, al-Halbusi stated that “he will also hold a meeting with Iran’s parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani to talk on the same issue."

He added, “We discussed the latest developments of government formation with Salih," pointing out that "Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, is charged of forming a government and he is free to choose the ministers of his cabinet without any pressure.”

While Iraq is often known as the "land of two rivers" -- the Euphrates and Tigris cross its territory -- the country's water resources have diminished in recent years.

Reservoirs are at around 10 percent of their capacity.

Beyond this year's dramatic lack of rain, experts say a central reason for Iraq's drought is the regional sharing of water resources.

Neighbouring Turkey and Iran have in recent years both rerouted cross-border water sources they share with Iraq.
