US warns India against buying S-400 surface missiles from Russia

US India
The United States has warned India of a planned deal to buy Russian S-400 surface-to-surface missiles from Russia during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to New Delhi this week and said the deal is subject to sanctions under US law.

The Indian army wants these missiles to deter China and surpass Pakistan.

A Kremlin official said India and Russia would sign the $5 billion missile deal during Putin's visit for annual summit talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which began Thursday.

However, the US has warned countries dealing with Russia's defense and intelligence sectors that they would be subject to automatic sanctions under a comprehensive law called the US Enemy Counter-Penalties Act signed by President Donald Trump in August.

The law aims to punish Putin for annexing the Ukrainian Crimea in 2014, his involvement in the Syrian civil war and his intervention in the 2016 US presidential election.
