Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit will meet Wednesday in Cairo with Iraq’s newly-elected parliamentary speaker, Mohamed al-Halbusi.
Arab Parliament Speaker Mishaal Al-Salami summoned Halbusi to meet with Aboul Gheit and deliver a speech before Arab league representatives on a number of local, regional and international developments and cases.
Halbusi’s visit, according to Salami, will boost cooperation between the Arab Parliament and Iraq and mutual coordination to resolve outstanding crises.
“Iraq is one of the Arab League’s founders and is considered one of the keystones of joint Arab actions and decision-making,” Salami told the press. “This invitation comes as the Arab Parliament seeks to support Iraq’s efforts in rebuilding liberated areas and achieving the aspirations of Iraqi people.”
Halbusi was unanimously elected as Iraq’s parliament's new speaker on Sept. 15, bringing the country one step closer to forming a government after months of political uncertainty and obstacles.
Previous remarks by Halbousi stressed the necessity of forming a strong Iraqi cabinet that is capable of facing current challenges and setting the country’s national interest as a top priority.
