Iraqi political blocs agree to name Abdul Mahdi as PM

Adil Abdul Mahdi

The Iraqi political blocs agreed on the nomination of the Iraqi politician Adil Abdul Mahdi to be the next prime minister, succeeding Haidar al-Abadi, according to an informed source on Friday.

The sources pointed out that the choice of Abdul Mahdi, former Vice President and former oil minister, came in order to resolve a dispute between various coalitions including the coalition of the former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, 'Building Alliance’, Reform and Reconstruction Coalition which is supported by the Shiite leader, Muqtada Al-Sadr, Alliance towards Reforms Coalition, and the National Wisdom Movement led by Ammar al-Hakim.

A source close to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said that the latter would announce his support for Abdul Mahdi to take over the premiership at once as the choice of the religious reference, while Abadi would then serve as vice president.

Although Abdul Mahdi did not officially comment on his candidacy, he earlier announced that he had stopped writing his op-ed articles in Al-Adala newspaper because of his preoccupation with political discussions, however, he did not address their nature.
