source close to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said that the latter would
announce his support for Adil Abdul Mahdi to take over the premiership at once as
the choice of the religious reference, while Abadi would then serve as vice
The source said, quoting Abadi, "Some political circles and media have attributed the conversation of the religious reference to mean that its candidate for leading the next government is Adil Abdul Mahdi,” adding that “if this is the option of the reference, I will announce my support for him.”
Political parties close to Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's alliance and the Fatah Alliance led by Hadi al-Amiri spoke of the candidacy of former Supreme Islamic Council leader Adil Abdul Mahdi for the post of Prime Minister, with the support of the supreme Shiite authority in Iraq, cleric Ali al-Sistani.
Although Abdul Mahdi did not officially comment on his candidacy, he earlier announced that he had stopped writing his op-ed articles in Al-Adala newspaper because of his preoccupation with political discussions, although he did not address their nature.
The sources pointed out that the choice of Abdul Mahdi for the post of prime minister came in order to resolve a dispute between various coalitions.
