British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt confirmed that Russia will pay a "heavy price" if it continues to use chemical weapons after the poisoning of former Russian intelligence officer Sergey Skripal and his daughter Yulia with nerve gas in Salisbury in March.

Hunt said in a press statement that he had a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at the UN General Assembly in New York.

"Our message to Russia is very clear. If you do, the price will be very high. They have paid a very high diplomatic price, but they need to understand that it will not be a comfortable place for Russia in the world if that's how they act," Hunt stated.

"It was very difficult, because it is unacceptable for Russia to order agents from the military intelligence unit to use chemical weapons on British soil," he said.

Hunt said he believed the Russians had attempted the assassination because they felt they had "escaped" the consequences of poisoning Alexander Litvinenko, another former Russian agent, in London in 2005.
