Par'l to decide on latest presidency issues on Thursday session

The Iraqi Parliament is finally settling issues related to the upcoming presidential election in its Thursday session, member of pro-Iran Fatah coalition, Abd el-Hussein Al-Zirgawi said on Wednesday.

He added that political parties have called the Kurdish powers to solve their problems and nominate a sole candidate for the presidency of Iraq.

However, MP from the National Wisdom Movement, Hassan al-Masoudi has told The Baghdad Post that The Kurdish powers will not agree on a sole presidential candidate.

"The negotiations and consultations of the two main Kurdish parties have not reached a consensus so far on the candidate, and may need another period of time to resolve this matter," Masoudi said.

Member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Majid Shinkali also affirmed that Kurdish powers have not yet settled on a candidate to run for Iraqi president.

Shinkali revealed that preliminary suggestions regarding presidential candidates include Hoshyar Zebari, Latif Rashid, and Rowsch Nuri Shaways, affirming that choosing a candidate requires the approval of the two main Kurdish parties, namely the Kurdish Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

He referred to the ongoing discussions between Kurdish parties and political blocs in Baghdad to form the largest parliamentary bloc, which has become clear following the election of the Parliament speaker and his two deputies.

Iraq’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), one of the ruling Kurdish parties, has nominated Kurdish leader Barham Salih as candidate in the upcoming presidential election.

Salim Shushkayi declared his nomination for the presidency on Saturday. Shushkayi said he would submit his autobiography to the House of Representatives on Saturday, expressing his wishes to win in the election.

“My party has decided to appoint me as their sole candidate for the position of Iraqi president in Baghdad,” Salim Shushkayi told Rudaw English on Friday.

Kurdish Professor, Kamal Aziz Qaituli was also nominated for the post of president of the republic.

"I have announced my candidacy for the presidency of the Republic of Iraq, putting myself in the service of a people worthy of life," Qaituli said in a statement.

The list of candidates includes the Kurdish leader and member of Gorran Party Sardar Abdullah, Iraqi Minister of Water Resources under the government of Nouri al-Maliki ‘Latif Rashid,’ the leader in the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) Mala Bakhtiyar, and Fazil Mirani –also a KDP leader, Sarwa Abdul Wahid, former deputy of the Change Party, and Imad Kamal Saeed as an independent Kurdish candidate.
