UNESCO urges nations to contribute for heritage revival in Iraq: Azoulay

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said that the UN's cultural agency is working on having world nations contribute money required for the agency's initiative regarding reviving cultural heritage in many Iraqi cities.

This came during her meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 73).

Azoulay said the UNESCO will continue to support Iraq and enhance cooperation with the Iraqi government to accomplish the agency's initiatives in Iraqi cities.

For his part, Jaafari said that Iraq suffered terrorism, combated it and won the war against it, adding that world nations and international organizations have to support Iraq and participate in rebuilding the infrastructure of the cities that were harmed by terrorism.

The United Arab Emirates, UNESCO and Iraq signed on Sunday an agreement, according to which the UAE will contribute $50.4 million to rebuild the cultural heritage of the war-torn ancient city of Mosul.
