UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame underlined on Wednesday the importance of applying the agreed-upon ceasefire agreement among warring parties in Tripoli in an effective way.

Protecting civilians and the infrastructure of the Libyan capital are a top priority, he said.

The UN envoy's remarks come after new clashes flared between rival militias south of Libya's capital Tripoli on Tuesday, causing widespread power outages.

Fighting, which broke out last month in Tripoli, killed at least 63 people and wounded 159 others - mostly civilians - before the ceasefire came into effect on September 4 under the UN sponsorship.
