More than 70K Basra residents poisoned by contaminated drinking water

Water contamination crisis is worsening in Basra amid complete gov’t silence
The number of people poisoned by contaminated drinking water exceeded 70,000
The number of people poisoned by contaminated drinking water exceeded 70,000, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the southern city of Basra said on Tuesday.

In an official statement, head of the office Mahdi al-Tamimi said that the exact reason of having so many people of Basra poisoned by drinking water is still unknown.

Tamimi urged Iraq's new Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbusi to seek a solution to the water crisis in Basra and not to count on the promises of the government whose tenure has ended.

The oil-rich Basra is reportedly one of the country's worst impoverished regions and two months ago the government pledged a multi-billion dollar emergency plan to revive its infrastructure and services.
