Faleh al-Khazali, MP for the province of Basra, announced Saturday that he has agreed with newly elected Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi that the parliament's first act must take place in the province of Basra.
Khazali said in a press statement that a delegation from the presidency, and any parliamentarians who would like to join, will come to Basra to see what is really happening and to hear the demands of the people.
He added that they look forward to a phase of service, not privileges.
Hablusi, previously governor of Anbar province, was elected as the parliament's new speaker earlier on Saturday, marking an important step towards establishing a new government four months after an inconclusive national election.
Basra province had witnessed huge protests in the past few days as protesters called for enhancing services provided to citizens, combating corruption and halting Iran's interference in Iraq's internal affairs.
