Barzani, McGurk discuss Kurdish position on Iraqi government formation

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Nechirvan Barzani discussed on Tuesday with the Special Presidential Envoy to the Coalition against ISIS, Brett McGurk, the Kurdish position on the formation of the next Iraqi government.

Barzani and McGurk addressed the current political situation in the Kurdistan Region, the efforts to form the new Iraqi government, and the preparations for parliamentary elections, which will be held on September 30, the government said in a press statement.

They expressed their hopes that the Erbil and Baghdad efforts will lead to a positive outcome, and that a new government will be formed that takes into consideration the interests of all Iraqi people, the statement added.

This represents a significant change in the US position. Previously, it had asked the KRG to postpone the Kurdistan elections, until a government had been formed in Baghdad.
