MP Taoufik al-Kaabi called on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to hold accountable those responsible for the use of excessive force against demonstrators in the province of Basra.
Five protesters were killed and 16 more were injured during a second day of clashes with security forces in Iraq’s main southern city.
Al-Kaabi said that Basra province is one of the richest provinces in Iraq but suffers from many problems in services, infrastructure, and unemployment due to mismanagement.
Al-Kaabi called on demonstrators to abide by the peaceful demonstrations and avoid violence.
"Basra has 14 million dollars out of its total estimated liability of petrodollars have not been disposed of yet," added Kaabi.
The oil-rich province has been witnessing weeks ago demonstrations in protest against the deteriorating situation there caused by the lack of basic services, unemployment, and poverty.
