Basra protesters block Garmat Ali roads

Hundreds of Basra demonstrators have blocked on Sunday main roads of Garmat Ali district in order to protest against lack of job opportunities and basic services.

Basra is witnessing mass demonstrations and sit-ins to protest against shortage of jobs and electricity, as well as water pollution and deterioration of basic services.

On Saturday, The Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR) office in Basra warned of the critical situation in the province due to the lack of services, pointing out that more than 17,000 to 18,000 residents have been poisoned by heavily polluted and salty drinking water.

In a press statement released on Saturday, Mahdy al-Tamimi, head of the IHCHR's office urged the two Iraqi central and local governments to take urgent steps as soon as possible to help in alleviating the sufferings of Basra residents, who are demanding their legitimate rights.
