IOM: 440,000 Afghans left Iran due to deteriorating economy

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Friday that Iran's recent economic crisis has forced thousands of Afghan migrants to go back their hometown.

More than 440,000 Afghans have left Iran in the past seven months, the organization said in a report.

The number of Afghan migrants returning from Iran in 2018 is unprecedented, double the number who returned to Afghanistan from Iran in 2017, a spokesman for the Immigration Organization said.

After the withdrawal of US President Donald Trump from the May 8 nuclear deal with Iran and his assertion of severe sanctions against Iran, the Iranian currency's rate fell within six months to its lowest level in Iran's history.
