Saddam-era official hails protests to eliminate Iran's influence in Iraq

Former Iraqi statesman and military commander, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri on Thursday hailed the sweeping protests in Iraq to eliminate the Iranian influence.

During a speech he delivered marking the end of the Iraq-Iran war, al-Douri said the war that lasted for eight years was highly important to defend the sovereignty of Iraq.

Al-Douri served as Vice Chairman of the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council until the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. He was regarded as the closest advisor and deputy under former President Saddam Hussein.
