Diyala
Criminal Court sentenced on Monday four defendants to death over
accusations of their belonging to an outlawed group and committing terrorist
acts in the province in 2007.
In a
statement, Abdul Sattar Berqdar, a spokesperson for
the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq said that Diyala criminal
court has heard the cases of the four defendants accused of belonging to
Al-Qaeda terrorist group and committing horrific acts.
Berqdar added
that those criminals have previously abducted and killed five members of a
family in Diyala in 2007.
“The court
ruling was issued pursuant to article 4/1 of the anti-terrorism law,”
Berqdar pointed
out.
Iraq’s
anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have
helped jihadists even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks.
