International airlines announce resuming flights to Kurdistan

Number of international airlines operated flights to Sulaimaniyah airport, such as Qatar Airways, after lifting the ban on flights to Kurdistan region.

Qatar Airways operated a flight to Sulaimaniyah airport on Thursday, announcing to operate a flight per week, according to the national union media. Fly Germania also announced to operate a flight to the region starting from April 5.

On 19 March, the first Saudi aircraft arrived in Erbil. On the same day, the plane returned carrying a group of pilgrims.

First Flydubai flight carrying 100 passengers arrived at Arbil International Airport in March 19 and then took off from Erbil to Dubai carrying 164 passengers.

On March 15, 2018, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered the reopening of Sulaymaniyah and Erbil airports after completing legal and constitutional procedures with federal supervision over the two airports after a five-month ban.

Baghdad imposed a flight ban on Kurdistan Region on 29 September last, among other series of actions, in response to holding an independence referendum on the 25th of September 2017.
