Iraq ranked 169th among the world's most corrupt countries, report

Corruption in Iraq

Iraq has been ranked once again as one of the world's most corrupt countries, according to a report by Berlin-based Transparency International released on Wednesday.

The report has put Iraq in the 169th place out of 180 countries.

Under Shia-dominated rule, Iraqi wealth has been extensively siphoned off.

Syria came at the 178th place while Iran came 130th.

As well as the endemic corruption, the report also lambasted deterioration in freedom of expression in the Arab world.

Iraq and Syria were among the worst performing Arab states, all of which “suffer from weak public institutions, internal conflict and deep instability.

It also expected that corruption will continue to flourish in the way that will exacerbate the political and economic instability of the region.
