Zaher al-Abadi, National Iraqi Alliance (NIA) MP, said Sunday he was surprised at Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s stance on the demands and appeals of Basra MPs.
In a statement issued by the MP’s media office, Abadi said Basra MPs had called on the prime minister to agree on holding a conference titled “Reconstructing and Building Basra is Gateway to Iraq’s Reconstruction and Stabilization”, during which Basra Governorate’s demands were supposed to be presented.
But the governorate did not receive any response in this regard although three months have passed. This comes at a time the prime minister has received many delegations and MPs from Kurdistan Region, he further stated.
The MP called on the PM to provide explanation for the disregard of the legitimate demands of Basra residents.
The government does not care about the importance of Basra, which produces nearly 85% of Iraq’s oil exports. Unlike Kurdistan Region, Basra has not received financial allocations, he added.
