Border guards have to be equipped to control Iraqi-Syrian border - MP

Hakim al-Zamili, head of the security and defense committee in the Iraqi parliament, has called for equipping border guards' command with human resources and advanced equipment to control the Iraqi-Syrian border.

According to a statement issued by his media office on Sunday, al-Zamili said victory over ISIS was achieved through the great sacrifices of the Iraqi people and a massive bill estimated at $100 billion.

Efforts have to be intensified to control borders, particularly the 605- kilometer Iraq-Syrian border to put an end to the flow of terrorists into the Iraqi territory, he noted.

Border control is one of the responsibilities of border guards and the Iraqi army in coordination with intelligence services, he further stated.

Funds and job grades have to be allocated in the 2018 state budget to support border guards' command and purchase advanced equipment and warplanes, he added.

On December 9, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over ISIS, announcing the end of more than three years of battles to regain control over nearly one-third of the country that had been under the terrorist group’s dominion.

This came months after armed forces wrested back control over Iraq’s major urban areas, notably its second-largest city, Mosul, and shifted focus to mopping up remnants of the terrorists who had escaped or gone underground in the vast desert border areas between Iraq and Syria.
