MPs of Kurds, Basra, National Iraqi Alliance reject 2018 budget draft

2018 federal budget to face obstacles without Kurds MPs approval
The Iraqi parliament will vote on the final form of 2018 federal budget within 45 days but it will face obstacles without Kurds' approval, Hossam Al-Okabi, the member of Iraqi Parliament Finance Committee, said on Sunday.

He added that the Kurdish lawmakers rejected the draft, approved by the government, as it envisions slashing the Kurdish region’s share from 17% to 12.7% of the total.

The MPs of Basra governorate also rejected this draft as well as many blocs at the National Iraqi Alliance.

Earlier, the MPs of National Iraqi Alliance have threatened not to attend the parliamentary sessions if their demands were not inserted in the draft.

Earlier on Saturday, The session to discuss the budget was adjourned to without reviewing it.

The cut of Kurdistan's share from the budget is one of several “punitive” constitutional measures that followed the Sept. 25 Kurdish referendum on independence.

Those measures also saw Baghdad seize control of disputed areas, border crossings and air bases, and demand that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) transfer taxes and other public revenues to the central government.
