Interior Min warns against terrorist plan to run over Karbala pilgrims

Shiite pilgrims

Ministry of Interior warned on Friday of attacks by terrorists, who plan to run over visitors heading towards Karbala city, located about 100 km southwest of Baghdad, in attacks similar to the ones that have been carried by ISIS terrorists in France and other countries.

A document issued by Joint Coordination Center in Basra Governorate of the ministry’s operations directorate has unveiled this information.

Terrorists plan to run over Iranian and foreign pilgrims, coming from land border crossings and heading towards Karbala, according to the document.

Every year, huge crowds of pilgrims travel to the city of Karbala in pilgrimage to the Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala on Arba’een Day.

Arba’een is a Shia Muslim religious observance that occurs forty days after the Day of Ashura. It commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed on the 10th day of the month of Muharram.

Those terrorists are expected to carry out their attacks in Wasit Governorate, Baghdad-Hillah road, and Hillah-Karbala road, it added.
