Tillerson urges Baghdad, Erbil to enter into discussion, dialogue

Abadi and Tillerson

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has called on Baghdad and Erbil to end the crisis that has emerged following Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum, which was held in September.
Tillerson also called on officials in Iraq and Kurdistan Region to resort to dialogue to resolve the dispute.
“We are concerned and have been saddened by the recent differences that have emerged between the Kurdistan regional government and the Iraqi central government,” Tillerson said in statements made to reporters after he had met with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
Asserting that “we have friends” in Baghdad and the Kurdish region’s capital, Erbil, Tillerson said “we encourage both parties to enter into discussion and dialogue.”
Earlier, Washington has urged Erbil and Baghdad to avoid escalation after the punitive measures Abadi has taken against Kurdistan and the offensive the Iraqi forces launched on Kirkuk last week.
US Secretary of State arrived in Iraq Monday night in an unannounced visit.
