Araji visits Kirkuk, urges displaced civilians to get back homes

Iraqi minister of interior has arrived in Kirkuk city to discuss issues related to the security situation in the province, member of Kirkuk's provincial council Ali Mahdi announced on Sunday.

Araji will meet with the interim governor of Kirkuk as well as commanders of police and army forces there, Mahdi added.

On late Sunday, Araji and interim governor of Kirkuk will hold a joined press conference.

During the conference, Araji urged displaced civilians to return to their homes.

He also called on security forces to abide by security rules to bring stability to the province.

This comes as the crisis in Kirkuk has escalated. Peshmerga forces have been fending off attacks launched by the Iraqi forces, backed by IMIS, since Sunday night.

Tensions between the two sides over the future of Kurdistan have been high since the Kurds voted for independence in a September referendum.
