Erbil Governorate in Kurdistan Region said on Tuesday it would fly flags at half-mast as soon as an official mourning over the death of former Iraqi president Jalal Talabani is announced by the region’s presidency.
In a statement, the governorate said that the ceremony of flying the flag at half-mast on Erbil Citadel would be attended by Erbil governor Nozad Hadi.
Iraqi Kurdish leader Talabani died on Tuesday.
Talabani, a veteran leader of the Kurdish struggle for self-determination, stepped down as president in 2014, after a long period of treatment following a stroke in 2012.
Talabani was born near Erbil, now the seat of the Kurdistan Regional Government in northern Iraq, in 1933.
He was the first non-Arab president of Iraq, elected in 2005, two years after the US-led invasion that toppled Iraqi former president Saddam Hussein's regime.
