Iraq's Masum calls Baghdad, Erbil officials to avoid escalation

Fuad Masum

Iraqi President Fuad Masum calls upon Baghdad and Erbil's senior officials to avoid escalation and immediately return to dialogue as the Kurdistan Region is preparing for a decisive independence referendum on Monday.
In a presidential statement, Masum said, "To confront this unilateral decision (Kurdistan's referendum) in light of our constitutional responsibility to do our utmost efforts to distance our country and the unity of our people from the grave dangers, we call upon political leaders in Erbil and Baghdad to avoid escalation at any price and immediately focus on returning to dialogue and agreement as a top priority".

We reaffirm the priority of the principles of the Constitution and respect the calls and support of the international community to continue the dialogue among Iraqi forces to resolve any internal problem through consensual solutions, and to move resolutely to restore the necessary confidence between the two sides and go together to build a state of citizenship and rights that all of us aspire to, the statement read.

The statement comes after Kurdistan president Massoud Barzani announced at a press conference in the evening in Arbil that the Supreme Council for the referendum in the Kurdistan region decided to hold a final referendum on the 25th of September.
