Iraqi army starts operations to retake ISIS-held Tal Afar

Iraqi army
Spokesman for Iraqi Defense Ministry said Monday an offensive to recapture Tal Afar has started.

Mohamed al-Khodary said Iraqi warplanes had carried out a series of airstrikes against ISIS targets in the city.

The battle for Tal Afar comes days after Iraqi army backed by US-led international coalition, Kurdish paramilitaries  and sectarian militias liberated Mosul from ISIS.

Mosul remained a stronghold for the terror group for nearly three years.

US Col. Pat Work, commander of the 82nd Airborne’s Task Force Falcon, said that a period of transition was underway.

"Transitions are hard, and it’s a lot of work that remains. And we’re helping [Iraqi forces] through [this transition] right now,” he said in statements to The Washington Times.
