Abadi: IMIS is 'essential', will stay to protect Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced on Saturday after a meeting with Iranian Militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) leaders that the militias are legitimate and essential security establishments.

Abadi asserted that the State controls all Iraqi security establishments, for the sake of maintaining security in the country.

"IMIS is a neutral security establishment, is here (Iraq) to stay and it is our duty to protect it, because we are one," Abadi further added.

IMIS was accused by many international, local human rights organizations of committing sectarian genocide against Sunni militias in Iraq.
