Iraqi Counter-terrorism forces had controlled the center of the Old City district in the right bank of Mosul city in Nineveh govrnortae, security experts told the Baghdad Post on Saturday.
The area includes the Great Nuri Mosque and its leaning minaret as well as Serg-Khana area and other areas surrounding it.
The police forces are now advancing in Bab el Tob area, security expert Gassim Hanoun told the Baghdad Post, pointing out that the area is considered the center of the Old City district. He asserted that the area is witnessing a severe clashes between the Iraqi joint forces and ISIS militiamen.
In statements to the Baghdad Post, strategic expert Gassim al Mousawi said that the security forces have to be deployed to Al Anbar governorate after wrapping up the battle for Mosul in order to participate with Al-Jazira Operation Command to eliminate all ISIS remnants in the country.
The cooperation and coordination between the two operations commands will guarantee securing the western areas starting from Tal Afar until the Iraqi-Jordanian borders, Mousawi further said.
Earlier, security forces, in coordination with international coalition warplanes and US logistic support, regained the eastern areas of Mosul city and most of its western areas after eight months of fierce fights. The forces are currently intensifying their efforts to regain the areas of the Old City district.
Observers say a few number of ISIS terrorists are still hiding inside Mosul city. The observers expected that the militiamen will continue to fight in order to protect their gains in the city.
