US embassy
US Embassy in Iraq reaffirmed commitment to upholding the fundamental principles of a free and independent press around the world, and pay tribute to the journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession, the embassy said on its official Facebook page on Wednesday .

In a statement, the embassy said that Freedom of speech and expression is the cornerstone of democratic values.

Journalists and bloggers keep citizens informed, keep governments honest, and often reveal uncomfortable truths. World Press Freedom Day is an opportunity for all nations to denounce media censorship, respect and uphold freedom of expression, advocate for the protection of journalists, and promote tolerance of opinion, the statement read.

The US Embassy takes careful note of the dangers faced by journalists around the world. Many brave journalists have been killed or wounded while carrying out their duties. It is imperative that journalists be protected and permitted to perform their tasks without harassment or intimidation.

The United States fully supports freedom of the press and freedom of expression, including online, as fundamental to any democracy.
