US Concludes Withdrawal of Troops from NE Syria: Pentagon Chief

The United States’ army has completed its withdrawal from northeastern Syria while keeping about 600 troops on the ground but elsewhere in the country, said Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

“It will be relatively static around that number. But if we see things happen ... I can dial up a little bit,” Esper said in an interview with Reuters, suggesting the more troops could move into Syria from Iraq whenever needed.

He hinted that Washington could further reduce the number of its troops in Syria if European allies were ready to replace them.

“The coalition is talking a lot again. We could see some allies want to volunteer troops,” he added. “If an allied country, a NATO country, decided to give us 50 people, I might be able to turn off 50 people.”
