Netherlands halts Yazidi repatriation to Kurdistan Region

The Dutch government has stopped repatriating Yazidi asylum seekers to the Kurdistan Region due to difficult conditions at displacement camps there, a senior official told lawmakers in the Hague.

In a response to questions from Dutch MPs, Dutch State Secretary for Security and Justice Ankie Broekers-Knol said that Yazidis are living in camps in the Kurdistan Region without sufficient access to needed services such as food and shelter.

Moreover, she added that the Netherlands no longer considers the Kurdistan Region as the place of residence for Yazidis that fled from other parts of Iraq. As a result, they will now be considered a vulnerable minority.

The designation, according to the secretary, doesn’t guarantee Yazidi applicants that they will be guaranteed asylum status, but that it would make it easier.
