The United States may have been forced to renew Iraq's exemption of commitment to the US sanctions against Iran, because it knows that Iraq is in need of energy, especially in summer, as its production of energy is not sufficient for the domestic use, a government source said in a statement.

The United States, by extending the deadline for Iraq, is trying to "distance itself from the embarrassment that Iraq's failure to comply with its sanctions may cause, if it insists on preventing [Iraq] from importing energy from Iran," the source stated.

The US cooperates with the government of Adil Abd al-Mahdi, and "believes that it plays a positive role in the stability of the region and the resolution of its crisis," the source said, adding that the US appreciates Baghdad's stance toward the Syrian issue.

The US announced on Tuesday that the Trump administration decided to extend Iraq's exemption from committing to the sanctions against Iran for another 90 days.
