US hopes allies in Syria resumes anti-ISIS efforts

Joseph Dunford

The United States has expressed hopes that its allies in Syria continue the campaign against the ISIS after the US troops leave the country, a top US general said.

"I am confident we can maintain a campaign,” Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a statement on Friday, after a senior US official said that 400 troops will remain in Syria after the final step of the withdrawal from Syria.

Dunford was also quoted as saying that there is no change in the basic campaign and that resources are being adjusted to the threat.

On Thursday, the White House said the number of US troops staying in Syria would be 200, describing them “peacekeepers."
