Iraqi FM: US troops presence on Baghdad’s request

Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim

Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim stressed that the presence of US forces in Iraq is “according to an agreement and request of the former and current Iraqi Prime Ministers."

In remarks to reporters on the sidelines of the  Ministerial Conference of the anti-ISIS coalition held in Washington, Hakim added that Baghdad was in “continuous talks with the American side on this issue," adding that he discussed the issue with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The US military presence, according to Hakim, do not include combat troops, but “only military advisors and trainers, who are helping our army.”

He also expressed wonder at “some people in Iraq [who] want to make this subject a big issue.”

Members of the Iraqi parliament, including those from the bloc of the popular cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, as well as the pro-Iranian bloc of Shi’ite militias, led by Hadi al-Amiri, call for a vote to end the US military presence in the country.
