Secretary General of the Kurdish Peshmerga Ministry Lieutenant General Jabbar Yawar denied the presence of US troops in Halabja
city, which lies northeast of Baghdad near the Iranian border.
In a press statement, Yawar said that the US troops have only one military group in Erbil, which is in charge of training Kurdish forces in the Kurdistan region.
The Kurdistan Region shares a long border with Iran, extending to 1,000 kilometer long, and also has a 700 kilometer border with Turkey. As a consequence, it is hard for the US troops to deploy in separate parts of the region without air cover and tight ground protection.
Iraq's Defense Ministry earlier denied the presence of US military bases in Iraq.
