Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced Saturday
that work is underway to establish the largest date farm in the world.
Sisi said that the farm will contain 2.5 million palm trees of the finest dates, according to the Egyptian news site Youm7.
The farm is set to reclaim 1.5 million acres of land and will include 100,000 greenhouses, Egypt’s presidential spokesman Bassem Radi stated, adding that establishing this huge number of greenhouses is unprecedented in the world.
Radi explained that the project will provide the ability to grow various agricultural crops out of season, which will reflect positively on exports and provide numerous employment opportunities.
The spokesman added that the project will save water by 40 percent while providing the same amount of production, which serves Egypt strategy regarding water conservation.
