US demands Iraqi PM to take measures against Hezbollah militias

US Ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman has called on the new Iraqi government to take decisive measures against Iraqi Shi’ite militias of Hezbollah who threaten the presence of foreign troops in Iraq, especially the military personnel of the United States, a report claimed.

Pro-Iran Hezbollah has previously several times stated that the US forces in Iraq are not welcome, and that they would be targeted if they stay beyond their mission to defeat ISIS.

An unnamed source was cited by Shafaq News as saying that the demand was put forward by Ambassador Silliman in a letter directed to Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi.

Washington is aware of Iran’s growing influence in Iraq through militias operating under the umbrella organization of Hashd al-Shaabi. State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said earlier this month that Iran “must respect the sovereignty of the Iraqi government and permit the disarming, demobilization, and reintegration of Shia militias.”

The report came weeks after ambassador Silliman was criticized by liberal Iraqis for failing to encounter Iran’s hegemony in Iraq.
