Iraqi MP calls on Turkey to release Iraqi water quota

MP Jamal al-Mohammedawi, a member of the Iraqi delegation participating in the meetings of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, called on the Turkish government to release the Iraqi water quota to satisfy the needs of the Iraqi people.

The Iraqi delegation participating in the meetings met with the Turkish delegation at an expanded meeting to discuss issues of mutual concern, Mohammedawi's media office said in a statement on Monday.

"Water is a blessing and gift from the Lord of the Worlds to our countries in the region, and we do not accept that Turkey exploits this file under the pretext of filling the Ilısu Dam," the statement read.

Mohammedawi said that this problem, which harms the future of the country, can be addressed and that the disastrous consequences of the crisis can be alleviated through peaceful negotiation to ensure good neighborliness and preserve the common interests between the two Muslim countries, the statement read.

The Iraqi parliament and government are looking forward to developing and deepening the bilateral relations in the economic and cultural fields between the two Muslim nations, Mohammedawi added.
