Iran's presence in Syria threatens US partners: US special rep

James Jeffrey, the US special representative for Syria engagement, said that the US wants the Iranian military forces in Syria to withdraw once the causes of the conflict are resolved.

Jeffrey warned that Iran's military presence would threaten the US partners in the region.

The withdrawal of the Iranian forces backing Bashar al-Assad in Syria was not a US goal but should be an outcome to end the civil war, he asserted.

He added that the US sanctions imposed recently against Iran would encourage Iran to scale back its military presence in the war-torn country.

Jeffrey pointed out that the US believes the way forward in Syria includes defeating ISIS and ending the civil war.
