MPs call for granting 25% of ministerial posts to women

A number of Iraqi female parliamentarians called on Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to grant women at least 25% of the post of the new government.

MP Mayada al-Najar, a member of the group of "Iraqi Women Parliamentarians" said in a press statement that the group calls on Abdul Mahdi to grant women at least 25% of the cabinet, and restore the important role played by the Ministry of Women's Affairs, including addressing women's problems.

Najar condemned the percentage of women represented in Abdul Mahdi's cabinet, affirming that women represent half of the Iraqi society.

"We reiterate our demands on the 18th anniversary of issuing the UN Security Council resolution no. 1325 concerning women, security and peace, and the importance of women's participation in construction, development, stability and peace," she said, noting that the group calls for granting women at least 25% of the ministerial posts, so that women can be real partners in building Iraq.
