US designates Hezbollah as transnational criminal group

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Monday that five groups, including Hezbollah, have been designated as transnational criminal organizations.

Heavier sanctions will be imposed on these organizations, Sessions said, adding that these groups would face tougher judicial investigations and procedures.

The other groups include Sinaloa Cartel, Clan de Golfo and Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion.

Sessions noted that a special team of prosecutors with experience in the areas of international drug smuggling, terrorism, organized crime and money laundering would investigate individuals and networks providing support to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia.

"With this new task force being formed, our efforts will be more effective than before," said Sessions.

Hezbollah was designated by the US government as a terrorist entity in 2009. It has also been designated as a terrorist group by Israel and Saudi Arabia.
