Khamenei rep. urges Guardian Council to veto anti-terrorism treaty

Ali Shirazi, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s representative in the Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force, has asked Iran’s Guardian Council to refuse to ratify the UN’s 1999 TFC (Terrorist Financing Convention) treaty after the Iranian parliament approved it on Sunday, October 7.

"It is unacceptable that we abandon Lebanon, Syria and Iraq," Shirazi said, signaling to Iran’s support of terrorist activities in those countries, which he seeks to continue.

The Quds Force is one of five special military units within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), but its current responsibilities are outside Iran's borders, particularly in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, where it supports Hezbollah and other terrorist militias.

Iran is required to agree to the terms of the TFC treaty in order to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) blacklist of those who finance terrorism, which prevents foreign investment, but Iran’s conservatives are largely against it. Some Iranian members of parliament have stated they received threatening messages both before and after the vote.
