Washington insists on cracking bones of Iranian regime

Pompeo and Bolton
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton have made statements against Iran to reaffirm Washington's desire to break the bones of the Iranian regime.

Pompeo stressed that Iran is a source of threats to US missions in Iraq, while John Bolton described Iran as a rogue state.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the threats faced by US missions in Iraq, saying the intelligence is strong that Khamenei and his followers support these attacks on the United States.

The United States said on Friday it would close its consulate in the city of Basra and move diplomatic staff there, following mounting threats from Iranian-backed militias, including missiles launched near the consulate.

The State Department also issued a warning to its citizens not to travel to Iraq because "there is a high risk of violence and kidnappings."

Pompeo added that America ended a friendly treaty with Iran that dates back to 1955, before the 1979 Iranian revolution that strained relations with the US. He added that Iran is using the International Court of Justice for political purposes, after the World Court ruled Wednesday that the US must abide by its treaty with Iran.

For his part, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said that "Washington rejects the political exploitation of some international institutions," referring to the World Court ruling.

Bolton stressed that "the severe sanctions on Iran had a significant impact on the economy," adding, "We will not allow investments that allow Iran to develop its oil industry."

He considered it "ironic that Iran claims its support for peace in the world," pointing out that Iran is a “rogue state”. He clarified, however, that the US has no problem with the Iranian people.

Denying the idea of regime change, Bolton stated, "Our policy is not to change the regime in Iran, but to push the regime there to change its behavior."
