Ministry called for protecting journalists and guaranteeing their rights by
establishing a database with their details and the violations against them.
In official statement released Wednesday, the ministry affirmed that Undersecretary Hussein el-Zuhairi headed the meeting of the central committee to protect journalists, where he asserted the need to take care of the families of the journalists who faced violations, and providing a database for their full information.
Zuhairi also urged for the need to secure the necessary support to journalists whenever they report facing violation, and facilitate their complaint procedures.
Journalist Saif Hilal al-Azzawi, editor-in-chief of Al-Adhamiya website, was arrested at a cafe in the Adhamiya district north of Baghdad on Sunday.
The Iraqi Observatory for Press Freedoms demanded that the security authorities disclose the fate of Azzawi.
The observatory, quoting journalists, said that "Saif Hilal al-Azzawi, editor of Al-Adhamiya News website, was arrested by security forces at 12 o'clock on Sunday night when he was at a popular cafe."
They added that "the forces took al-Azzawi to the house of his wife's family and searched the house, and then they took him to an undisclosed location. There was no confirmation as to the nature of the charges against him."
The Iraqi Observatory for Press Freedoms called on the authorities to release Azzawi, explain the reasons for his arrest, and ensure his personal safety.
