Iran's government has shut two border crossings with Iraq after gunmen opened fire at a military parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz on Saturday, press outlets reported.
At least eight people were reported killed and 20 wounded, mostly members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard, according to Iranian state TV.
Iran’s state television announced that the attack targeted a platform where officials gathered to attend a parade marking the start of the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988).
"Several gunmen began shooting from behind the stand during the parade. There are several killed and injured," a correspondent told state television.
The TV report referred to the assailants as "Takfiri gunmen," and broadcast images of the immediate aftermath.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
